Marriage License Requirements in Ferry County

Both parties must appear in person at the Ferry County Auditor's Office to apply for a marriage license. Washington State law under RCW 26.04.160 requires this for all counties. You cannot send a representative to apply on your behalf. There is no Washington residency requirement, so couples who live in other states or other Washington counties can apply here.

Each applicant must bring a valid government-issued photo ID that shows their date of birth. A driver's license, state ID, U.S. passport, or military ID all qualify. The office collects Social Security numbers for both parties. If you prefer not to provide yours, you can sign an exemption. You also need to provide the full legal names of both parents, including your mother's maiden name, and the birthplaces of both parents. If either applicant was previously married, that must be stated on the application. No supporting documents proving a prior divorce or a deceased spouse are required, but the information must be accurate. Both people must be at least 18. No blood test is needed.

Ferry County has a notable requirement for younger applicants. Special counseling is required for any person who is 17 years old at the time of application. This is a local procedure, so contact the Auditor's Office for details if this applies to your situation. For all applicants 18 and over, the standard state requirements apply.

Mail applications are accepted in some cases. Contact the Auditor's Office to ask about the procedure. Both parties must sign the application before a notary public if submitting by mail. Include payment and your wedding date when you mail the forms. Allow enough lead time so the license arrives and clears the waiting period before your ceremony.

Fees and Waiting Period

The marriage license fee in Ferry County is $154. This fee includes one certified copy of the marriage certificate, which is included at no extra charge. That is a different arrangement than most Washington counties, where the license fee and copy fees are separate. Additional certified copies beyond the first one cost $3 each. The fee is non-refundable. Contact the Auditor's Office to confirm which payment types are currently accepted before your visit.

Like all Washington counties, Ferry County enforces a mandatory three-day waiting period. This comes from RCW 26.04.180. There are no exceptions or waivers under any circumstances. The three-day period starts on the day you submit the application. After that, the license is active and valid for 60 days from the date of issuance. The ceremony must happen between day three and day 63. If you miss that window, the license expires and you would need to apply again and pay the full fee a second time.

Your Ferry County marriage license is valid for use anywhere in Washington State. You apply in Republic, but you can hold your ceremony in a different city or county. The ceremony just needs to take place within Washington's borders.

For recent marriages, the Ferry County Auditor's Office is the right place to start. Staff can look up recorded marriage documents by name or document number. Certified copies of recorded certificates are available for $3 each. Because Ferry County is small, staff can often assist with searches fairly quickly.

Marriage records from 1899 to 1947 are indexed and searchable at the Washington State Digital Archives. This free online tool lets you search by name and see index information. Some records include scanned document images. This is the main resource for historical Ferry County marriage research and genealogical work. Access the Ferry County collection at the Washington State Digital Archives Ferry County marriage records page.

For marriages from 1968 to the present, the Washington State Department of Health also has statewide records. The DOH Vital Records office issues certified copies for $25 each. You can order through VitalChek online, by phone at 1-866-687-1464, or by mail. Online orders typically arrive within 3 to 7 business days. Mail orders can take six to eight weeks. No proof of relationship to the parties is required to request a marriage record from the DOH.

Note: The DOH may not have records from marriages that took place within the past five months. For very recent marriages, the Auditor's Office in Republic is the better source.

What Marriage Records Contain

A Ferry County marriage license includes the license number, the issue date, and the full legal names of both applicants. It also shows ages, birthplaces, current residential addresses, the date of application, a notation of the three-day waiting period, and the license expiration date. Parents' full names and birthplaces appear as well. All of this is captured at the time of application and becomes part of the official record. Social Security numbers are collected but do not appear in the public record.

After the ceremony, the officiant signs and returns the completed certificate to the Auditor's Office. The certificate adds the date and place of the ceremony, the officiant's name, title, and signature, the names and signatures of two witnesses, the date the document was returned, and the recording book and page number. Once recorded, the full document becomes the official Ferry County marriage record.

Certified copies carry the county's official seal and can be used to prove marriage for legal and administrative purposes. Common uses include updating a name on a passport, driver's license, or Social Security card, and establishing marital status for insurance or benefit purposes. Ferry County includes one certified copy in the $154 license fee. Additional copies cost $3 each and can be requested from the Auditor's Office or, for marriages recorded after 1968, from the state DOH.

Washington State marriage records covered by RCW Chapter 26.04 are public records. Anyone can request a copy without proving a relationship to the parties. Records involving certain sensitive details may have limited access, but the standard marriage certificate is open to the public.
